Real speech shrinks — like English “going to” → “gonna.” Japanese does it constantly: ている → てる, のだ → んだ, ては → ちゃ, では → じゃ, なければ → なきゃ. Textbooks rarely show these, but anime and conversation are full of them, so recognizing them is what lets you actually follow along.
